Prestigious India's OLDEST ENGINEERING COLLEGE (Thomson College of Civil Engineering) was established in Roorkee. This college was given the status of UNIVERSITY in 1947 and was the only university offering ONLY Engineering degrees and Masters in Science. It's famous for its Civil Engineering. University of Roorkee was supposed to become the first IIT. University of Roorkee is now an IIT (INDIAN INSTITUE OF TECHNOLOGY) located at Roorkee.
Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) a premiere research institute under CSIR is also located in Roorkee.
